If your child has ADHD, someone has already told you to get a sensory swing, and the advice usually stops at "it helps." This guide goes one level down: what a swing does in the nervous system, what the research does and does not say, which type matches which kid, a ten-minute swing-before-homework routine, and how to hang one safely.
The quick answer: a sensory swing feeds two senses most people never think about: the vestibular sense (the inner ear's motion detector) and proprioception (the body's sense of pressure and position). For many kids with ADHD, 10 minutes of slow, rhythmic, front-to-back swinging before a seated task is associated with an easier transition into focus. Choose by need: cocoon for calming and retreat, platform for big movement and heavy work, hammock for the in-between, classic seat for the child who wants to pump. Linear swinging calms; spinning alerts, so ration it. Hang it from a joist with a rated hanger, or from a floor-to-ceiling frame's crossbar with no drilling. What a swing does in the nervous system, in plain words
The swing works on the input side, on two senses that sit underneath attention:
The vestibular sense
Fluid-filled loops in each inner ear that report every change in the head's speed and direction, straight to the brainstem circuits that set muscle tone, eye control, and the overall "volume" of the nervous system. Slow, rhythmic, straight-line motion turns the volume down; fast, spinning, or unpredictable motion turns it up. More in vestibular input for kids.
Proprioception
Receptors in muscles and joints that report pressure, stretch, and effort. Deep pressure and muscle work (occupational therapists call it heavy work) are associated with a settled, organized feeling in almost every child. This framework comes from A. Jean Ayres, the occupational therapist who described sensory integration in the 1970s, and reached parents through Carol Kranowitz's The Out-of-Sync Child. The everyday version: a child who is bouncing off the walls is usually a child looking for input, and a swing hands it to them in a measured dose. That is also why rocking, spinning, and fidgeting are worth reading as regulation rather than misbehavior: the child is doing for themselves what the swing does better.
What the research suggests about movement and attention
The CDC describes ADHD as one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions of childhood: a difference in how a brain is wired for attention and arousal, in degree rather than kind. The research on movement fits that picture:
- Physical activity and ADHD symptoms. A 2015 systematic review and meta-analysis in Child: Care, Health and Development pooled controlled trials of exercise programs for children with ADHD and found moderate-to-large associations with improvements in attention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, anxiety, and executive function.
- The Spark argument. Psychiatrist John Ratey's 2008 book Spark lays out how exercise raises the same neurotransmitters (dopamine and norepinephrine) that ADHD medications act on, priming the attention system before demanding work. It is a synthesis, not a trial, but it explains why "run first, then sit" works in so many classrooms.
- Sensory-based approaches specifically. Here the evidence is thinner. The American Academy of Pediatrics' 2012 policy statement on sensory integration therapies found the research base limited and advised families to treat these approaches as one part of a plan, measured against goals, with a clinician.
The fair summary: movement is associated with better attention in kids with ADHD across many studies; swings deliver a kind of movement occupational therapists use daily; and whether a swing helps your child is something you will know after two weeks with a routine. It is not a substitute for the plan your pediatrician or OT builds.
Sensory swing types, matched to the child
The types inside the "sensory swing" category give very different input. Choose by what your child seeks or avoids.

The swing-before-homework routine
A swing in the corner is a toy; a swing with a routine is a tool. The ten-minute version below follows the OT principle that the order is alert, then organize, then calm.
- Minutes 0 to 2: arrive. Snack finished, shoes off, mat down. If they are wound up, a minute of fast pumping or a few counted spins gets the surplus out.
- Minutes 2 to 7: slow linear swinging. Front to back, in a straight line, about one full swing every two seconds. This is the calming dose: linear, rhythmic, predictable. A cocoon or hammock adds pressure; on a seat swing, a weighted lap pad does the same job.
- Minutes 7 to 9: heavy work off the swing. Push the empty swing ten times with straight arms, carry the homework bin to the table, five wall push-ups. Proprioception is the bridge from motion to sitting still.
- Minute 10: sit, start. Homework begins within a minute of the last heavy-work move. The effect fades if there is a screen between the swing and the desk.
Linear vs rotary, in one line: straight-line swinging calms and organizes; spinning alerts and can flood. Use spinning for the under-responsive, sluggish child, in counted sets of no more than 10 rotations one way, then a full stop, then the other way. Never spin a child who is already revved.
When to stop, whatever the clock says: flushed or pale face, sweating, yawning, hiccups, glassy eyes, giddy laughter that will not stop, nausea, or a child who wants off. Occupational therapists often describe vestibular effects as outlasting the session by hours; less is usually the right amount. A child who asks for spinning constantly is giving their OT information, not a reason to spin more.

Where to hang a sensory swing: ceiling mount vs frame
Ceiling mount. A rated hanger lag-bolted into a joist, with a swivel and a carabiner. Cheapest and most permanent. The catches: finding the joist, a bolt hole left behind, one swing forever in one place, and renters usually cannot do it.
Indoor swing frame. A free-standing A-frame needs no drilling but takes 6 to 8 feet of floor, tips if it is light, and does one thing.
The crossbar of a floor-to-ceiling gym. This is the version we build, and the one most families with ADHD kids end up with, because the swing is rarely the only thing the child needs. Does a sensory swing help ADHD? Is spinning good or bad for kids with ADHD? Spinning is the strongest vestibular input and it alerts rather than calms. It suits an under-responsive, sluggish child in counted doses (no more than 10 rotations one way, a full stop, then the other way) and it is the wrong input for a child who is already revved. Slow linear swinging is the default; spinning is the exception.
Do I need to drill into the ceiling to hang a sensory swing? Not necessarily. A ceiling mount needs a joist and a rated hanger. A floor-to-ceiling tension-mounted frame carries a swing from its crossbar with no drilling, and takes a few square feet of floor. Never hang a swing from a drywall anchor or a door-frame bar.
Is a sensory swing HSA or FSA eligible? It may be, with a Letter of Medical Necessity from your child's clinician stating the diagnosis and why the equipment is part of the plan. Plans differ, so check with your administrator before buying and keep the letter with your receipt.
