Let's start with the straight answer, because you deserve one: no study has ever tested a home climbing gym specifically. No randomized trial. Not on our gym, not on anyone's. Most brands would never tell you that. We just did. Here's why we're comfortable saying it out loud: the specific study is missing, but the evidence around it is real, peer-reviewed, and points clearly in one direction. Once you see the chain, you'll understand exactly what a home gym can do, and what no one can promise you.
The quick answer: there is no study testing a home climbing gym directly, so anyone claiming one is guaranteed to develop your child is guessing. What the research does show, consistently, is a chain of associations: homes with the right active equipment are linked to more active kids, climbing is shown to build fitness, motor control, and strength, and active indoor play beats the screen time it replaces. The catch that keeps us careful: it only works if it's something your kids actually use, every day. Outdoor play is still the gold standard. A home gym is what keeps the movement going on the days the park isn't an option.

First, the claim we'll never make
You'll never see us say a climbing gym is "clinically guaranteed to develop your child's brain." It isn't. Anyone who says that about their equipment is guessing, or worse.
The strongest climbing-specific study we could find was a small pilot in 13 adult rock climbers. Reviews of home-based activity programs show mixed, often limited results. So we hold that line hard: no causal claims, no miracle promises. What we have instead is better than hype. It's the evidence, laid out in three links.
Link 1: kids with the right active equipment at home move more
This is the most direct evidence, and it's consistent.
A 2024 study of 169 preschoolers found that a home full of active, "gross-motor" toys, the kind that let kids climb, crawl, and build, strongly predicted how much they moved. And that movement, in turn, predicted their motor-skill development. The activity was the bridge. (Liu et al., 2024.)
A much larger study of 4,092 children put it plainly: "Having the right combination of play equipment at home may be important for children's physical activity." The same study found the opposite for screens: kids with more electronic equipment met activity guidelines on fewer days. (Prioreschi et al., 2019.)
Notice the word "combination." It's not "buy one thing and you're done." It's about giving kids real, active options they'll actually reach for.
The caveat you're smart enough to want
These studies are correlational. They show that active kids and active equipment go together, not that one causes the other. Maybe active families just buy more gear. And the evidence isn't unanimous: one study of 235 children found general home features mattered, but specific equipment didn't move the needle much (HomeSPACE, 2019). So the real signal isn't "equipment is magic." It's narrower and more useful: what matters is the right active equipment, easy to access, that kids actually use every day. A gym gathering dust does nothing. A gym in the living room they climb twenty times a day is a different story.
Link 2: climbing itself builds real, measurable strength and coordination
Step away from "home gyms" for a second and just look at climbing.
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled 18 trials and 568 people. Its finding: climbing produced "statistically significant improvement in the physical dimension", fitness, motor control, dexterity, and strength, and is "a safe and effective" activity. (Gassner et al., 2023, PM&R.)
Fair caveat: those studies were mostly on therapy patients and adults, not healthy kids at home. So it supports "climbing builds motor skills and strength," a claim we're confident in, not a direct verdict on any one product.
Pair that with what the CDC already tells us: it lists climbing, monkey bars, and pull-ups by name as muscle-strengthening activities children need. Climbing isn't filler. It's on the official list.
Link 3: active indoor play beats the alternative it replaces
On the days the weather wins and everyone's stuck inside, the real question isn't "gym vs. the park." The park isn't on the table. It's "climbing vs. the couch."
Even active video games, a far weaker cousin of real climbing, burn two to three times the energy of watching TV, reaching the intensity of a moderate walk. (Graf et al., Pediatrics; 2024 review of 23 studies.) Real, whole-body climbing sits well above that.
The limit worth stating: that's a short-term measure, not a verdict on lifelong fitness. But the point stands. When it's climbing or a screen, climbing wins every time.
Where the idea came from (it's older than you think)
None of this is a modern invention. In 1971, a Russian engineer named Vladimir Skripalev was told his newborn son might never walk. He built a climbing complex into their small apartment, "the stadium in the apartment," and his son thrived.
