Step one: measure the ceiling like an installer, not a homeowner
Homeowners measure ceiling height once, in the middle of the room. Installers measure at every post location and at two or three points along the bar run, because the basement is the floor most likely to vary: a slab poured with a slight fall toward the drain, joists furred down an inch on one side. Step three: respect the concrete
