So you say the two least effective words in parenting: "calm down." Here is the secret the therapy world has known for years: for most kids with ADHD, calm is not a decision. It is a body state, and you reach it through the body, not through instructions. This is the playbook: the downshifting activities, and the before-homework and bedtime routines that string them together.

The quick answer: the calming activities that work best for kids with ADHD are slow, rhythmic, and body-based: gentle back-and-forth swinging, deep pressure (pillow squishes, blanket burritos, weighted lap pads), hanging and slow stretching, quiet heavy work like carrying and pushing, and breathing exercises paired with movement instead of stillness. Why "calm down" fails, and what actually works

Telling a dysregulated child to calm down is like telling a spinning top to stand still: the instruction is aimed at the wrong system. Attention and self-regulation ride on the state of the nervous system, and for many kids with ADHD that system runs hot, hungry for input, and slow to downshift on command.

The fix is not less input. It is the right input. A 2015 meta-analysis of randomized trials by Cerrillo-Urbina and colleagues linked exercise programs in children with ADHD not only to better attention but also to reductions in anxiety, one of the most common passengers riding along with ADHD.
