Let's get the disclosure out of the way: we make steel play gyms, and Avenlur makes wooden ones. They are a real company with a wide catalog and plenty of happy families, and if you are cross-shopping the two brands you deserve numbers instead of adjectives. So this page is built one way: every Avenlur fact below comes from their own site, their Amazon listings, or their authorized dealers, checked in August 2026, and every Brainrich number is the one we publish ourselves. Where Avenlur is genuinely better, we say so.

Construction: two different bets on materials

The deepest difference between the brands is not quality, it is philosophy, and we wrote a whole guide on it: Steel vs. Wood Climbing Gyms. The short version:

Avenlur's bet is wood. Their gyms are Montessori-inspired and look like furniture, which matters when the gym lives in your living room, and we will not pretend otherwise: the design is genuinely attractive. As of August 2026 their site describes FSC-certified New Zealand pine for the Walnut, Cherry, and Magnolia lines with BPA-free varnish, while the Amazon listing for the Walnut lists beech and pine, and the outdoor Chestnut is cedar. None of those are bad materials; if the exact species matters to you, ask them which applies to the current production batch. Wood's trade-off is that it is a finished surface: varnish takes the wear, and Avenlur's own warranty excludes weather damage on outdoor use.

Our bet is steel. Every Brainrich frame is steel with a non-toxic powder coat, rubber-coated rungs for grip, and plastic parts free of phthalates and other substances prohibited by child safety standards. Powder-coated steel does not need refinishing, and it is what lets us publish one weight rating for the whole line and invite parents to climb on with their kids.

Weight ratings: one number vs. three

This is the section that made us build this page, so here it is stated carefully, with sources, all checked in August 2026:

Three different numbers for the same flagship gym. You will also see "500 lb" on Avenlur pages; read closely and that is a total figure for multiple children on one set, not a single-user rating. Elsewhere in the line, the Chestnut is rated 110 lb per child, the monkey-bar attachment is rated 200 lb, and several models (Grove, Magnolia, Sweetgum, Cherry, Neem, Betula) publish no capacity at all as of August 2026. Age guidance shows the same drift: the Walnut page says "1+ Years" in its spec table and "all ages, even adults" in its FAQ, and the Chestnut page lists both "ages 3-8" and "Ages 2-8".

To be clear about what this does and does not mean: none of it is evidence that an Avenlur gym is unsafe. It means the published paperwork is inconsistent, so before you buy, email them and ask for the current rating in writing for the exact model you want.

The Brainrich answer is one sentence: every gym is rated 220 lb per user, and frames are tested to 440 lb. The rating stays 220; the testing margin is why a parent can demonstrate the monkey bars instead of just spotting them.

One more paperwork note. Avenlur's site states "Certified to ASTM and CPSIA standards" across its pages; as of August 2026 we could not find the specific standard numbers or the certificates published anywhere on their site. That does not mean the testing never happened. It means you cannot verify it from the published pages, so whichever brand you buy (ours included), ask for the standard number the product was tested to and request the certificate.

Adjustability: fixed at purchase vs. adjusted for years

Every Avenlur Walnut-line gym is built at a fixed height, chosen when you order (79" or 95"), with a fixed layout, and as of August 2026 no Avenlur product offers post-purchase height adjustment. Credit where it is due: the Walnut Modular ($749) lets you reorder and add panels ($149-249 each), which is real flexibility of a different kind, and the foldable Chestnut folds flat, which is the better answer than either of our gyms for a family that must reclaim the floor space every evening.

Brainrich floor gyms take the opposite approach: rungs and bar heights adjust, so the same frame is set at chest height for a 3-year-old learning to hang and raised for a 13-year-old doing pull-ups. One purchase covers the whole climbing childhood, ages 3 to 13 and beyond. Fairness requires the same disclosure we asked of them: our wall-mounted W3 and W3 Max are fixed-height by design, just like Avenlur's wall units; the adjustability advantage belongs to our floor-to-ceiling line.

What's in the box (and what costs extra)

Compare like with like and the sticker prices converge more than they first appear. As of August 2026, putting monkey bars on Avenlur's flagship means Walnut ($649-749) plus the Monkey Bar Attachment ($429, rated 200 lb), plus a mat ($189-199, always sold separately): about $1,267-1,377 before any protective flooring upgrades. A Spider V3 is $1,499 with the monkey-bar span included, and V3 spans are about a foot longer than the previous generation with an added rung, so two kids can share. Owners of a Model T2 or T3 can add the span later as a $699-749 attachment, which is exactly how the modular chain is designed: T3 ($899) grows into a Spider V3, then Spider Max V3 ($1,899), then Mega Max V3 ($2,399), reusing the frame you already own.

Both brands sell floor mats separately, so that line item is a wash. Where the boxes differ is inside: a Brainrich gym arrives like a Lego set, in multiple clearly marked boxes (ladders, crossbar, pull-up bars, accessories), which sounds trivial until you are the one sorting hardware on the living-room floor.

Install and assembly: drilling vs. tension

Avenlur's shipping deserves the first compliment: free US shipping by regular parcel courier is fast and simple, even if a 123 lb Walnut box arrives curbside. Installation is where the wood and steel philosophies really diverge:

Avenlur (as of August 2026): Walnut-line gyms bolt to wall studs. Their pages call assembly easy; their owners' documented reports say to budget real time: about 6 hours in one Amazon review from September 2025, 4 hours in another from February 2026, and 3.5 hours with two people in a review on Avenlur's own site feed, that last one including drilling extra anchor holes because the wall's studs were not on 16-inch centers. If your walls are standard and you own a stud finder, this is a normal weekend project; if you rent, drilling a gym into the studs may not be an option at all.

Brainrich: floor-to-ceiling gyms are tension-mounted, bracing between floor and any ceiling from 6'9" to 10'6" with no drilling into ceiling joists, which is why they work in rentals and why they move: unbolt nothing, take it down, rebuild it in the next house or the next room. V3 assembly also got specifically easier than earlier generations: unified hardware with fewer nut-and-bolt types, better part markings, and packaging organized so the build goes faster.

The outdoor question

One boundary first: Brainrich gyms are indoor equipment, so this section is only for families cross-shopping Avenlur's outdoor line, sets like the Chestnut and Hawthorn. And a fair note before the record: Avenlur's indoor sets review well on wood quality and finish; nothing below is about them. Outdoors, the documented record reads differently:

We document this rather than dramatize it: wood outdoors is a maintenance commitment, and Avenlur says so themselves. The Brainrich contrast takes one sentence: powder-coated steel is an indoor system by design, and its maintenance story is checking that bolts stay tight, not sanding and resealing. Warranty, returns, and the money questions

Warranty: advantage Avenlur, with an asterisk. Their 5-year parts warranty is longer than anything we promise, and that is worth saying plainly. Read the terms before you weigh it: it covers manufacturing defects only, and weather damage is excluded, which matters for the cedar outdoor line.

Returns: advantage Brainrich, without an asterisk. As of August 2026, returning a non-defective Avenlur gym within their 30-day window requires an RMA, carries a 20% restocking fee, and you pay return shipping to New Jersey. On a $649 Walnut that is about $130 in restocking alone, plus the cost of shipping a very heavy box.
